Rent a car in Grafenwöhr. By the day or the week.
Family flying in to see you? Two-week rotation at the Grafenwöhr Training Area? Just landed at Tower Barracks and your own car is still weeks away? You don't need a six-month contract - you need a car for a few days, and you need it without the fine print German rental chains save for the counter.
So here it is, plainly: rent from age 18, no young-driver surcharge. US stateside licenses welcome. Full insurance always included - never an add-on. And you book the whole thing over WhatsApp in minutes, not through a call center.
Who this is for
The short-stay problem at Graf.
Tower Barracks runs on people who are only here for a while - and Grafenwöhr is not a town you cover on foot.
Grafenwöhr is unusual: a small Oberpfalz town sitting beside one of the largest US training areas in Europe, which means a constant churn of people who need wheels for days, not years. Units cycle through the Grafenwöhr Training Area on rotations and visiting soldiers can't exactly borrow the motor pool for a Saturday in Nuremberg. Parents and spouses fly into Munich or Nuremberg to visit someone stationed at Tower Barracks - and then discover the last leg to Graf has no passenger rail at all. Families out in Netzaberg suddenly need a second car for a week when one is in the shop. And every summer a fresh wave of newly arrived soldiers lands with a stateside license in their pocket and their own car still somewhere on the Atlantic.
The standard German rental chains are built for none of this. Most want you 21 or older - often 23 or 25 for anything decent - and stack a young-driver surcharge on top if you're under that. Insurance is quoted as a teaser rate and sold back to you at the counter. We do the opposite: 18 is the minimum age, full stop, the full insurance is already in the number we quote, and your US stateside license is exactly what we expect to see. One heads-up we'd rather give you now than at handover: if you're here under SOFA status, the USAREUR license requirement follows you, not the car - so carry your USAREUR certificate alongside your stateside license when you drive.
Booking is deliberately boring. You message us on WhatsApp with your dates, we answer with what's free and an all-in price, you confirm. No account, no app, no hold music. That's the whole process.
The cars
Economy runabout or 600 hp. Your call.
One WhatsApp message covers the whole range.
The cars come from the fleet of our partner Performance Rentals GmbH, based just down the road in Weiden - which is also the company behind SubYourCar, so "partner" here means the people handing you the keys, not a broker chain. At the top end that fleet is genuinely fun: the Audi RS6 Avant (600 hp, from €299/day), the Audi RS3 and Mercedes-AMG E53 (each from €229/day) and the BMW M440d Convertible (from €249/day) - every one of them with full insurance already included, every one rentable from age 18. If your visit lines up with a free weekend, the derestricted A93 is right there.
Need something more sensible? Economy and mid-size cars are available on request - message us what you need (automatic, room for two car seats, a week of airport runs) and we'll tell you what we can put together for your dates and what it costs. We'd rather quote you a real price for a real car than publish a teaser number that doesn't survive contact with the counter.
If your parents or spouse are flying in to visit you at Tower Barracks, have them message us before they board. We'll sort out the car and the handover in Weiden, and they'll spend their first hour in Germany driving to see you - not queueing at an airport rental desk that wants a 25-year-old with a credit card.
Worth the tank of fuel
A week around Graf, done right.
The best argument for a rental car here is what's within a day's drive of it.
Grafenwöhr itself is a slow afternoon: the old town, the Kulturzentrum with its Elvis history - the King really did serve at Graf in 1958, the town leans into it - and you're done. The reason to have a car is everything around it. Nuremberg is an easy day trip west for the castle, the old town and the Christmas market in season. Regensburg, a UNESCO-listed medieval city on the Danube, is a very normal Saturday. Munich and the Alps are a realistic weekend, and with a car Prague is close enough that half of Tower Barracks seems to have done it - the Czech border is under an hour east of here. None of that works from Graf without your own wheels; with them, a one-week visit turns into a proper European trip.
Two local driving notes, because we'd rather you hear them from us. First: you're next to a 232 km² training area and military convoys use the public roads around it - give them room and don't cut into the middle of one. Second: the run between Weiden and Graf is country road through villages, so trust the 25-minute estimate, not the optimistic one your map app shows at 2 a.m.
Short-term rental questions.
How old do I have to be?
18. No 21+ rule, no 25+ rule, no young-driver surcharge. Same cars, same full insurance, whatever your age. That includes junior enlisted at Tower Barracks - the group German chains usually turn away first.
Can I rent with my US stateside license?
Yes - stateside licenses are welcome. If you're here under SOFA status, also carry your USAREUR certificate when driving: that requirement follows the driver and applies to rental cars too. Visiting family from the States just bring their normal US license.
Is insurance really included?
Always. Full insurance is part of every price we quote - there's no coverage tier to pick and no upsell at handover. If the WhatsApp message says a number, that number already includes full cover.
Where do I pick the car up?
The fleet is based in Weiden, about 22 km from Grafenwoehr - roughly a 25-minute drive from Tower Barracks. Message us on WhatsApp and we'll sort the handover, including whether delivery toward Graf is possible for your dates.
How do I actually book?
Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and what you need - "economy automatic for 5 days", "something fun for the weekend", whatever it is. We reply with availability and an all-in price, you confirm, done. Email works too: mail@subyourcar.com.
What if I need the car for months, not days?
Then stop paying day rates - that's what our monthly product is for. See monthly car rental for Grafenwoehr for the long-stay version with everything included.
I'm at Vilseck / Rose Barracks - same deal?
Same deal, own page: rent a car in Vilseck. Vilseck is on the far side of the training area from Graf, so the practical details differ slightly.
