Bavaria: Grafenwöhr, Vilseck and Hohenfels
The three USAG Bavaria communities are the ones closest to us. Grafenwöhr is about 22 km from Weiden and has no passenger train at all, which is why most families there need a car from week one. Vilseck is about half an hour away and, unusually, has an hourly regional train to Weiden, so you can come and collect the car without owning one. Hohenfels is about an hour by car and has no station of its own. For all three, pickup in Weiden is free, and delivery costs €399: all three lie inside our 150 km radius (straight-line distance).
Franconia: Ansbach and Illesheim
USAG Ansbach covers Katterbach and Ansbach, a town with an ICE station and real dealers, and Storck Barracks in Illesheim, which sits in deep rural Franconia about 40 km further on. Both are roughly a two-hour drive from Weiden, so pickup in Weiden is the default; both still lie inside our 150 km radius (straight-line distance), so delivery costs €399.
Baden-Württemberg and the Alps: Stuttgart and Garmisch
USAG Stuttgart with Patch Barracks and Panzer Kaserne is the closest of the western garrisons, and the one place on this list where an environmental zone and a diesel ban apply together - Wiesbaden has the zone, but no diesel ban. Garmisch has good trains, but alpine winters, Oberammergau runs and trips into Austria are where a car earns its keep. Both are served with pickup in Weiden and delivery on request.
Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate: Wiesbaden, the KMC, Baumholder and Spangdahlem
Clay Kaserne in Wiesbaden is close to Frankfurt Airport and inside an active green-sticker zone. Ramstein Air Base and Kaiserslautern form the largest American community in Europe, with a vehicle-registration backlog that was documented there in 2024. Baumholder sits high in the Westrich with villages that have no bus, and Spangdahlem is our longest run at around 500 km. These are four to seven hours from Weiden, so delivery is on request and scheduled with buffer, never same-day.
