Long-term car rental for Wiesbaden: Clay Kaserne is about five miles from the Hauptbahnhof.
Let's start with the part that argues against us: Wiesbaden is one of the few communities we serve where you are not stranded without a car. You're posted to the state capital of Hessen. Frankfurt Airport - the airport you almost certainly land at - is about 27 km from Clay Kaserne, roughly a 19-minute drive. There's an S-Bahn from Wiesbaden Hauptbahnhof to that airport that runs around the clock. What the trains don't cover is the last leg, out to Erbenheim.
In short: SubYourCar is a long-term car rental (a car subscription) for the U.S. military community at Lucius D. Clay Kaserne in Wiesbaden. You take a car for six months or for 30 days, from €1,229 a month on the 6-month plan (30 days from €1,229 incl. VAT, or from €1,033 VAT-free with a VAT form), with insurance, registration, maintenance, seasonal tyres and 3,000 km a month included. There is no down payment; the deposit is three months' rent, due on site at handover, not online. You get the deposit back immediately at the return, as soon as the return report shows no damage. Pickup in Weiden, delivery on request.
But here's the part the map hides. Clay Kaserne isn't in Wiesbaden city - it's out in Erbenheim, a borough of about ten thousand people, roughly five miles from the Hauptbahnhof (7.8 to 8.7 km by road, depending on which gate you measure to). Without a car, the airport that's 19 minutes away by road becomes about an hour and twenty by train and bus - there's no direct connection. And your duty day doesn't start at the Hauptbahnhof. What we fill is the gap: an insured car on our plates, everything included, six months at a time. Hand it back at the end of your term once your own car catches up with you, or early when you PCS.

How it works from Wiesbaden
Four steps, and the only one that needs your time is the handover.
Book online
Pick your car, choose a start date at least three days out and upload your licence. Add your VAT form if you have one.
We confirm by email
We confirm the date and the place. Pickup in Weiden is free; delivery this far is on request only, and we quote the price by email first.
Pick up and drive
Bring your USAREUR licence and your home-country licence, sign, and pay the deposit of three months' rent on the spot. The car is registered, insured and taxed in our name.
Hand it back
After six months, or after 30 days on the VAT-form plan, you hand the car back in Weiden. Nothing renews automatically; a new subscription with another car is always possible.
Getting the car to you
Weiden to Wiesbaden crosses the Frankfurt ring.
363 km, and the last stretch is one of the busiest pieces of road in the country. Here's how we plan it.
The route is A93 south out of Weiden, A6, then the A3 the long way west - past Würzburg and Aschaffenburg - and finally the A66 into Wiesbaden. A routing engine calls it about three and a half hours with zero traffic. We plan four to five, and we'll tell you why rather than just pad the number quietly.
The A3 between Würzburg and Frankfurt is one of Germany's worst corridors for heavy truck traffic and rolling roadworks. Then the run finishes across the Frankfurt/Rhein-Main ring. At rush hour it can eat an hour by itself. So pickup is in Weiden: delivery to Wiesbaden is on request only, and we agree the terms and the date by email before you book.
If you're timing it around a POV shipment, the maths of that gap - and it exists even when nothing goes wrong - is in our guide to getting a car before your POV arrives.
Wiesbaden is the one place we serve where the arrival airport is genuinely next door - about 27 km, call it 19 minutes by car. Without a car it's a different story: train plus the number 28 bus, around an hour and twenty minutes, no direct connection. (The S8 from Wiesbaden Hbf to the airport is excellent - roughly 35 minutes, runs day and night - but the Hauptbahnhof is about five miles from Clay, so it solves the wrong leg.) Whichever way you arrive, the handover itself is in Weiden.
Know before you go
What's actually true at Wiesbaden.
The headquarters post sits inside an environmental zone - of the twelve communities on our list, only Stuttgart has one as well - and it carries a registration-office question we're not going to pretend we've resolved.
The green sticker: here, it's not trivia. It's the law of your host city.
On most of our base pages this section says "relax, there's no environmental zone anywhere near you." Not this one. Wiesbaden has an active Umweltzone covering large parts of the city, and a green Plakette has been required since 1 February 2013. Drive into the zone without the sticker and it's a fine - currently 100 euros, no points. Since the city about five miles from your front gate is where you'll shop, eat and take visitors, this is a rule you live with, not a footnote.
Two traps inside that fact, both current:
- The Mainz trap. The zone started life as a joint Mainz-Wiesbaden zone across the Rhine. On 1 October 2025 Mainz abolished its half - which took Rheinland-Pfalz to zero environmental zones statewide. Wiesbaden's half did not go with it. Anyone reasoning "Mainz dropped it, so the area is clear" gets Wiesbaden wrong: Wiesbaden is Hessen, and Hessen still has six zones, including Frankfurt and Darmstadt.
- The good news half. There is no diesel driving ban in Wiesbaden - a Euro-5 ban was averted through an air-quality package, and only the green sticker requirement remains. That makes this a far simpler city to drive in than Stuttgart, where a green sticker alone is not enough for older diesels.
On our cars the sticker is fitted before handover, so the whole topic is handled before you ever turn a key. If you buy a car privately, the city's own registration office in Schierstein issues Feinstaubplaketten - see below.
Registration: the German office is clear, the Army office genuinely isn't
Wiesbaden is a kreisfreie Stadt, so the German side is straightforward - one authority:
- Stadt Wiesbaden, Zulassungsbehörde in Wiesbaden-Schierstein · zulassungsbehoerde@wiesbaden.de
Stielstraße 3, 65201 Wiesbaden · appointment only - so book before you go, via the official page of the Stadt Wiesbaden (checked 22 September 2026). Bonus: this office also issues the green Feinstaubplakette on the spot.
The garrison's own page puts Vehicle Registration in Bldg 1182 on Clay Kaserne - Mon–Fri 07:30–12:00 and 13:00–14:30, closed over lunch, closed the last business day of every month and on U.S. and German holidays. But a garrison news release separately describes a Vehicle Registration satellite office in Bldg 1023E, Room 166, Mon–Fri 07:45–15:45. Most likely both are real and split the workload - but we couldn't resolve which one you need for which task, and we're not going to guess and send you to the wrong door. Book via the garrison's scheduler at usagwischeduler.timetap.com or email the office first, and check the garrison page on the day. How the U.S. Forces registration system works in general - plates, inspection, insurance card - is in our registration guide.
The car is registered to us in Weiden on WEN plates and stays that way. You're not the Halter - no Schierstein appointment, no Clay Kaserne building hunt, no plate run, no deregistration when you PCS. You drive it and hand it back. Everything above matters when you're buying, and the full picture of how the subscription route compares is in our guide to long-term car rental for the U.S. military community.
This is the flagpole. That cuts both ways.
Clay Kaserne is home to U.S. Army Europe and Africa headquarters. You'll also see the garrison described as the largest U.S. Army community in Germany, with figures like "over 56,000" - and other breakdowns that land near 20,000. Those numbers differ by roughly a factor of three depending on who's being counted, and we couldn't verify either at the source, so we're not going to pick one and print it as fact. What we can say from the shape of the place: a headquarters community means a heavy share of staff officers, DoD civilians and contractors on tours of every length - and contractors and civilians get no rental-car reimbursement at all, which is exactly the population a hand-it-back monthly car exists for.
USAREUR licence: yes, and Wiesbaden has its own wrinkle
The USAREUR licence requirement follows you, not the vehicle - it explicitly covers German-plated and rental cars, so it covers ours. You need a valid USAREUR licence and an in-date home-country licence, both. Worth knowing locally: back in 2019, USAG Wiesbaden made an in-person class and test mandatory for first-time applicants at this garrison, where others allowed the online route. That's old news, not breaking news - but it's a Wiesbaden-specific rule, so check the current local procedure rather than assuming what worked for a buddy at another post.
Insurance is not a friction point: our German third-party cover is by definition "in accordance with German law", which is exactly what the SOFA agreement requires.
Winter tyres: the rule is about weather, not months
You'll hear "October to Easter" quoted as law. It isn't - §2 Abs. 3a StVO is situational: winter tyres are required whenever there's black ice, packed snow, slush, ice or frost, on any date. And since 1 October 2024 only tyres with the Alpine symbol (three-peak mountain and snowflake) count - the old M+S marking alone no longer does, whatever older U.S. Forces guidance says. On our cars, legal tyres are our responsibility and our liability as the Halter, not yours. If you buy privately in the Rhein-Main area, check the sidewall for the mountain.
How long can you rent at Wiesbaden? Thirty days and up
Clay Kaserne is in Erbenheim, about five miles from the Hauptbahnhof, and the searches here run from airport pickups to whole tours. We only cover the long end: 30 days minimum, six months maximum. If you need a car for two days, a daily rental desk is the honest answer.
Our cars carry the green sticker, which in Wiesbaden is the law rather than trivia. Six months starts at €1,229 a month and 30 days with a VAT form at €1,033, VAT-free. Without a VAT form, 30 days costs the same figure as the monthly rate, gross. At €1,229 that is about €41 a day with fully comprehensive and partial cover (€1,500 deductible), road tax, registration, maintenance, seasonal tyres and 3,000 km a month already in it. You add fuel. There is no down payment, and the deposit is three months’ rent, due at handover in Weiden, not online.
Prices and the full list are on the cars page; what a VAT form does to the bill is in our guide to using a VAT form for a car rental in Germany.
Wiesbaden questions
Honestly - do I need a car at Wiesbaden?
Less desperately than at Graf or Hohenfels, and we'll say so out loud. Wiesbaden is a state capital with a real bus network, and the S8 links the Hauptbahnhof to Frankfurt Airport around the clock. What the transit doesn't do is the Erbenheim leg: Clay Kaserne is about five miles from the Hauptbahnhof, and airport-to-post without a car is an hour and twenty with a change. Where we're useful is the gap - the weeks before your POV lands or before you've bought and registered something, when the duty day starts at a fixed time in Erbenheim.
Do I need the green environmental sticker?
Yes - and Wiesbaden is one of the only places we serve where that's the answer. The city's Umweltzone has required a green Plakette since February 2013 and it's still in force. Don't be fooled by Mainz across the river dropping its half of the old joint zone in October 2025 - Wiesbaden kept its own. No diesel ban here though; green sticker is the whole requirement, and our cars carry it before handover.
How fast can you get a car to me?
Pickup is in Weiden, 363.1 km away - A93, A6, A3, A66 - and we plan four to five hours for that drive because the A3 truck corridor and the Frankfurt ring are real. Delivery to Wiesbaden is on request only: message us with your dates before you book, and we'll confirm by email whether we can do it and what it costs.
I land at Frankfurt Airport. Can you meet me there?
No. The handover is in Weiden, in the Oberpfalz - a four-to-five-hour drive east of the Wiesbaden area. Anything else is delivery, and delivery is on request only - tell us your dates and we'll confirm by email whether we can do it and on what terms. We won't book a jet-lagged family on the promise of an airport meet we haven't agreed.
Which building is the Army vehicle registration office in?
We won't state one as fact. The garrison page says Bldg 1182; a garrison release describes a satellite office in Bldg 1023E, Room 166. Both are probably real, but we couldn't resolve who does what today. Book through usagwischeduler.timetap.com or email the office before driving over. Hours per the garrison page: Mon-Fri 07:30-12:00 and 13:00-14:30, closed the last business day of the month.
Do I need a USAREUR licence for your car?
Yes. It follows the driver, not the plate, and explicitly covers German-plated and rental cars. Bring your valid USAREUR licence and your in-date home-country licence - both. First-timers at Wiesbaden: this garrison has required an in-person class and test since 2019, so plan the appointment rather than assuming the online route. More edge cases in our Q&A.
I'm down in the KMC or at Stuttgart, not Wiesbaden. Same deal?
Same product, genuinely different local facts. Kaiserslautern has no environmental zone at all, and Stuttgart has the opposite problem - a zone plus diesel rules a green sticker alone doesn't satisfy. Each has its own page: Kaiserslautern · Stuttgart.
Facts on this page were checked against wiesbaden.de, USAG Wiesbaden (home.army.mil), the Umweltbundesamt zone register and gesetze-im-internet.de in July 2026. Where sources conflicted - the Army registration building, the garrison population - we've said so rather than pick one and hope. Offices move and rules change; if something here is out of date, tell us and we'll fix it.
