Long-term car rental for Rose Barracks, Vilseck: 30 days or six months, everything in the price.

This page is for you if you need a car for 30 days or longer: the weeks before your POV clears the port, a tour that started without a car, a rotation that outlasts what a rental desk likes to write. You collect it in Weiden, 32 km from the gate.
It is not for you if you need a car for three days at the gate. We have no day rate, and a counter on or near the post will serve you faster. All four options are in one table below, with our prices, including the row where a rental counter, and not we, is the answer.

In short: SubYourCar is a long-term car rental (a car subscription) for the U.S. military community at Rose Barracks in Vilseck. You take a car for six months or for 30 days, from €1,229 a month (30 days from €1,229 incl. VAT, or from €1,033 VAT-free with a VAT form), with insurance, registration, maintenance, seasonal tyres and 3,000 km a month included. There is no down payment; the deposit is three months' rent, due on site at handover, not online. You get the deposit back immediately at the return, as soon as the return report shows no damage. Pickup in Weiden is free. Delivery costs €399 within a 150 km radius of Weiden (straight-line distance).

Your options at Rose Barracks

A day, 30 days or six months: which one is yours?

Four honest answers, including the one where you should not book with us.

How long you need a carWhat it suitsWhat it costs with usWhat is included
A day, a weekend, a week Your own car in the shop, a visitor, a run to the airport. Nothing – we have no day rate at all. Our shortest term is 30 days, so for a day, a weekend or a week a rental counter on or near the post is the right answer, and we are not it. –
30 days, with a VAT form (NF-1) The weeks before your POV is released, or a family that lands before the car does. €1,033 to €1,865 net for the 30 days, VAT-free with the form, ending on day 30 by itself. 3,000 km a month, fully comprehensive and partial cover (€1,500 deductible), registration, road tax, maintenance and seasonal tyres. You add fuel.
30 days, without a form The same 30 days when no VAT form is issued to you. €1,229 to €2,219 gross, the same figure as the monthly rate. Unchanged from the row above.
Six months A tour or a rotation, without buying a car in the spring and selling it in the autumn. €1,229 to €2,219 a month including VAT. The term ends after month six; a new subscription with another car can follow. The same again, at a price that does not move during the term. No down payment, deposit three months’ rent at the handover, and nothing here asks you to insure or register a car yourself.

The cars

Pick your car. From €1,229 a month, all-in.

For half an hour of country road in every season: an all-wheel-drive SUV, a diesel wagon and a compact sedan for Amberg errands. Insurance, registration, road tax, maintenance and 3,000 km a month are in the price, and every car carries the green environmental sticker, so Regensburg or Munich is not your problem. Seasonal tyres are fitted and included, because as the registered keeper that is our job, not yours. No setup fee. VAT forms accepted on the 30-day option. You add fuel.

How it works from Vilseck

Four steps, and the only one that needs your time is the handover.

  1. Book online

Pick your car, choose a start date at least three days out and upload your licence. Add your VAT form if you have one.

  2. We confirm by email

We confirm the date and the place. Pickup in Weiden is free; delivery costs €399, paid with the first payment, and we confirm the time by email.

  3. Pick up and drive

Bring your USAREUR licence and your home-country licence, sign, and pay the deposit of three months' rent on the spot. The car is registered, insured and taxed in our name.

  4. Hand it back

After six months, or after 30 days on the VAT-form plan, you hand the car back in Weiden. Nothing renews automatically; a new subscription with another car is always possible, and the rest of the move is in the PCS to Germany car checklist.

Newcomers

Your first week at Rose Barracks.

Almost none of it happens in Vilseck. That is the part nobody tells you before you land.

Your in-processing, your licence, your plates, your VAT form and your shipped car are all on Tower Barracks in Grafenwöhr, 24 km up the road (23.9 km, about 19 minutes, same routing engine and date as above). A duty shuttle runs between the two posts, but USAG Bavaria calls it “designated primarily for service members. If space permits, Civilians, Contractors, and Dependents may also ride” (USAG Bavaria, transportation, wording of 19 May 2026). That commute, not the weekend trip, is why people here want a car in week one.

  1. Day 0 and the first 24 hours. Soldiers arriving by Patriot Express for Grafenwöhr and Vilseck are received at the Welcome Center on Tower Barracks, and report to the Military Personnel Division on Tower Barracks, Bldg 244, within 24 hours or the next available duty day (USAG Bavaria, reception centre, wording of 9 March 2026).
  2. The USAREUR licence comes before any car. The garrison answers its own question plainly: “How soon after I arrive can I drive a Rental Car in Europe? As soon as you have received your USAREUR Driver’s License from the Driver’s License Office on Tower Barracks, Bldg 301.” Do the JKO course USA-007 and the exam USA-007-B before you fly; scores take at least 48 hours to process. Testing is in Bldg 301, Room 200A/B, Monday to Friday 07:45 to 11:30 and 12:30 to 15:45, with Monday and Friday reserved for in-processing soldiers; $30, valid five years (USAG Bavaria, wording of 19 May 2026, and the 405th AFSB, which runs drivers testing, 7 June 2026). Prepare on the plane with what the USAREUR licence test actually asks.
  3. Plates and registration: Bldg 301 again. USAG Bavaria lists one office for “Tower Barracks/Rose Barracks”, in Bldg 301, Monday to Friday 8:00 to 10:45 and 12:00 to 14:45. Its update of 19 August 2026 offers “walk-in services Monday through Friday”, with the queue starting at 7 a.m.: on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday walk-in places are limited because the office also serves booked appointments, and Wednesday is a “dedicated Walk-In Wednesday with no scheduled appointments”. Plates follow the geographic location of your CMR box, so ask which office yours maps to before you set off (USAG Bavaria, vehicle registration, update of 19 August 2026, read 29 September 2026). Step by step: registering a car at Bldg 301. With one of our cars, none of it is yours to do.
  4. Your POV lands in Grafenwöhr, not in Vilseck. The processing centre for this community is the Grafenwoehr VPC, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. – the address and the appointment are on the operator’s own site, which is the only place we will send you for them – and it is blunt about the order of things: the car must be registered in the USAREUR system before you may pick it up. Plates from Bldg 301 first, collection second. The German list has no centre in Vilseck (PCSmyPOV, the DoD shipping contractor’s own location list, read 22 September 2026). If that wait turns into months, that is the gap a car before your POV arrives is about.
  5. The VAT office, if you want the 30-day rate net. Tower Barracks, Room 129, Bldg 539, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed at weekends and on federal holidays. Rental cars are on its list of purchases where the 19 % can come off, and the form has to exist before you commit: “You must have a valid VAT form with you when placing an order” (USAG Bavaria MWR, VAT, updated 17 August 2026, checked 24 September 2026). What it does to our bill: using a VAT form for a car rental in Germany.
  6. Buying instead of renting? Two addresses. Vilseck sits in the Landkreis Amberg-Sulzbach, not in the city of Amberg, and the two run separate registration offices. Yours is the district one: visitor address Beethovenstraße 7 in Amberg, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday and Friday 8 a.m. to noon, no appointment needed (Landkreis Amberg-Sulzbach, checked 24 September 2026). The Landkreis even publishes its live waiting times, which tells you something about that queue. The same building houses the Führerscheinstelle, where Vilseck community members with a CMR 411 address get an international driving permit – call before you drive over: USAG Bavaria gives its number as 09621-39840, the 405th AFSB gives 09621-101300, and we are not going to guess which of the two official numbers is answered. The MWR resale lot, the one everyone calls the lemon lot, is on Tower Barracks at B607, $30 a month, registered at the Automotive Skills Center (USAG Bavaria MWR, checked 24 September 2026). Whether that maths beats renting: buy a beater or subscribe.

Getting the car to you

Half an hour of country road.

Or an hourly train, if you would rather come to us.

From Nikolaistraße 6b in Weiden to the official Rose Barracks navigation point on the St 2120 a routing engine gives 32.3 km and 32 minutes (OSRM on OpenStreetMap data, no traffic, 22 September 2026). We tell customers 30 to 35 minutes, because a figure without traffic is a lower bound and because this is two-lane country road nearly the whole way: 20.7 km of St 2166, a short hop on the B 299, then 8.7 km of St 2166 again, the same road the official POV directions name (“Follow road ST2166”). No autobahn shortcut, and villages where it drops to 50 km/h.

The train works here, which is unusual for the bases we serve

Vilseck has its own station at Bahnhofstr. 29, and the RE 41 between Nürnberg, Weiden and Neustadt runs hourly (departure board Weiden (Oberpf), valid from 14 December 2025, bahnhof.de, read 22 September 2026). Our pickup point is about 1 km from Weiden station, so collecting a car without owning one is realistic.

Two honest caveats. Vilseck station is “not staffed for advice and assistance” (bahnhof.de), and it is about 3 km from the Rose Barracks navigation point, so it is not walking distance from the gate. Buses replace the trains on this line from time to time, so check the DB app the day before.

Two German rules, briefly

Winter tyres and the green sticker.

Neither is your job on one of our cars. Both matter the moment you buy one.

Winter tyres: “O bis O” is not the law

The rule everyone repeats – October to Easter – is not in the statute. § 2 (3a) StVO is situational: winter tyres are required whenever there is black ice, packed snow, slush, ice or frost, and the law names no dates at all. On the St 2166 that works out to roughly October to Easter anyway – but conditions can turn in September, and the law does not wait for the calendar.

What counts as a winter tyre changed in 2024, and the guidance going round has not caught up

Since 1 October 2024 only tyres carrying the Alpine symbol (three peaks and a snowflake) count. M+S alone is no longer enough, and some U.S. Forces material still describes M+S as a winter tyre – that is the pre-2024 position. Check the sidewall if you buy privately. On our cars it is our problem, not yours: as the registered keeper, legal tyres are our responsibility and our liability.

Green sticker: not here, but yes for Regensburg

There is no Umweltzone in Vilseck, Amberg, Grafenwöhr or Weiden. Bavaria has exactly three – Munich, Augsburg and Regensburg, the last of them since January 2018 (Bavarian Environment Ministry). Our cars carry the green Umweltplakette anyway, so a city that has a zone never becomes a Saturday problem.

How long can you rent? Vilseck by the month, not by the day

A lot of what gets typed as car rental Vilseck means a car for a Saturday, or for the week your own car is in the shop. That is a rental counter’s job and we are not it: our shortest term is 30 days. The rest of that question is ours, the months before a POV clears the port, a tour that started without a car, a rotation that runs longer than a rental desk wants to write. The table further up lays out all four options, including the row where a rental counter, and not we, is the answer.

Rose Barracks is about 32 km from our pickup point in Weiden, and the RE 41 runs hourly into town, so collecting the car yourself is realistic here. Six months starts at €1,229 a month and 30 days with a VAT form at €1,033, VAT-free. Without a VAT form, 30 days costs the same figure as the monthly rate, gross. At €1,229 that is about €41 a day with fully comprehensive and partial cover (€1,500 deductible), road tax, registration, maintenance, seasonal tyres and 3,000 km a month already in it. You add fuel. There is no down payment, and the deposit is three months’ rent, due at handover in Weiden, not online.

Prices and the full list are on the cars page; what a VAT form does to the bill is in our guide to using a VAT form for a car rental in Germany.

Vilseck questions

I only need a car for a few days.

Then we are the wrong shop, and better you read it here than after filling in a form: our shortest term is 30 days. A rental counter on or near the post will have you driving today.

Can I get to you without a car?

Yes. The RE 41 runs hourly between Vilseck and Weiden, and our pickup point is about 1 km from Weiden station. Two caveats: Vilseck station is unstaffed, and it is roughly 3 km from the Rose Barracks navigation point, so not walking distance from the gate.

When can I drive a rental car after I arrive?

USAG Bavaria answers that one itself: as soon as you have your USAREUR licence from the Driver's License Office on Tower Barracks, Bldg 301. Do the JKO course USA-007 and the exam USA-007-B before you fly; scores take at least 48 hours to process.

Do I have to register or insure the car?

No. It is registered, taxed and insured in our name and stays that way, so you never see a registration office and there is nothing to deregister when you PCS. You bring your USAREUR licence and your home-country one, sign, and pay the deposit of three months' rent at the handover.

Where does my POV arrive?

In Grafenwoehr, not in Vilseck: the Grafenwoehr VPC, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the address and the appointment on pcsmypov.com. The shipping contractor's instruction is to register the car in the USAREUR system and collect plates from Bldg 301 before you pick it up.

Which German registration office covers Vilseck?

The Landkreis Amberg-Sulzbach one, not the city of Amberg: Beethovenstrasse 7 in Amberg, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday and Friday 8 a.m. to noon, no appointment needed. It only matters if you buy a car.

Do I need the green environmental sticker?

Not for Vilseck, Amberg, Graf or Weiden - there is no environmental zone anywhere near. You would need one for Regensburg, Munich or Augsburg. Our cars have it, so it is moot.

Where is the lemon lot for Vilseck?

The MWR auto resale lot for this community is on Tower Barracks, B607, $30 a month, registered at the Automotive Skills Center. The MWR page lists no lot in Vilseck.

I'm at Graf, not Vilseck. Same thing?

Close, but Graf is nearer to us, 22 km, and has no train at all. Its own page: Tower Barracks, Grafenwöhr.
