How it works from Spangdahlem

We confirm the date and the place. Pickup in Weiden is free; delivery this far is on request only, and we quote the price by email first.
Pick up and drive
Bring your USAREUR licence and your home-country licence, sign, and pay the deposit of three months' rent on the spot. The car is registered, insured and taxed in our name.
Hand it back
After six months, or after 30 days on the VAT-form plan, you hand the car back in Weiden. Nothing renews automatically; a new subscription with another car is always possible.

The route is A93 south out of Weiden, A6 west, A3 toward Frankfurt, then A60/A61 and finally the B50 over the Hunsrück and the Hochmoselbrücke into the Eifel. A routing engine calls it just over five hours with zero traffic. We plan six to seven, because the run crosses the Frankfurt/Rhein-Main ring and the last leg is two-lane Eifel road, not autobahn.
What that means for you, practically: book early. The customers this works best for are the ones who write from CONUS with orders in hand, or in their first week in TLF. Pickup is in Weiden; delivery to Spangdahlem is on request only, and we agree the terms and the date by email before you book. The car is then yours for the term - six months, or 30 days on the VAT-form plan, with a new subscription after that if you want to keep driving. What we won't do is promise "this afternoon" to win your booking and then miss it. If you need a car within hours rather than days, we may honestly not be your fastest option – and we'd rather tell you that here than after you booked.
The nearest passenger stations are Philippsheim, Hüttingen and Bitburg-Erdorf. A bus connects the village to Speicher, about 14 km away, where trains run toward Trier in one direction and Gerolstein/Cologne in the other. Bus 310 runs from Wittlich Hbf to Binsfeld. All of it exists; none of it gets you from your front door to a 06:30 shift with any reliability, and the official base shuttle is explicitly barred from filling that gap for personal errands.
The pattern is the Eifel itself: dispersed villages, real hills, and housing spread across a wide rural radius. Most of the community lives on the economy in villages around the base, and every one of those villages assumes a car.

What's actually true at Spang.
A fighter base deep in the Eifel has its own set of facts – including a registration trap that comes down to which Kreis your village is in.
This is a fighter base with a rotational rhythm
Spangdahlem is home to the 52nd Fighter Wing, flying the F-16, and the wing's footprint runs to units across five nations. The USAF has been here since September 1952, and the 52nd has been the host wing since December 1971, when it inherited squadrons from the 36th TFW at Bitburg – a base that has since closed, which is part of why this corner of the Eifel is so car-dependent today. The community is roughly 5,000 active duty plus about 7,000 family members.
Two things follow from that. First, this is the Air Force – it's a base, not a post, and the PCS rhythm and TDY churn are its own. Second, the rotational and short-tour population is large. If you're here for months rather than years, the usual advice – buy a lemon-lot beater, sell it on the way out – makes the least sense of anywhere, because the buy-register-inspect-sell cycle eats a short tour alive. Handing keys back at the end is exactly what a short tour needs.
Registration: your village decides which Kreis owns you
Spangdahlem itself (postcode 54529) sits in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm – not, as the rail geography would suggest, in Bernkastel-Wittlich. So for German registration:

German registration goes by where you live, not where you work. Live in Spangdahlem, Binsfeld or Speicher and it's Bitburg-Prüm. Live off toward Wittlich and you may fall under Landkreis Bernkastel-Wittlich instead – a different Kreisverwaltung entirely. Check your own village before booking any appointment.
The Air Force side is its own office: vehicle registration at Spangdahlem is run by the 52nd Security Forces Squadron and is appointment-only. We're deliberately not printing a building number, because we couldn't verify one at a source we trust and we won't send you to the wrong door. Check the base's own page for the current contact details before you drive over. Expect to need proof of ownership, orders, your USAREUR licence, CAC, proof of inspection, and the VPC shipping document.
The car is registered to us in Weiden on WEN plates and stays that way. You're not the Halter, so no Kreisverwaltung appointment, no SFS registration slot, no inspection booking, no deregistration when you PCS. You drive it and hand it back. The offices above are for people buying a car – which, on a short Eifel tour, is precisely the cycle we exist to spare you.
Winter tyres: the Eifel takes the rule seriously for you
Spangdahlem sits at about 365 m elevation in genuinely hilly country, so this isn't theoretical. The German rule – §2 Abs. 3a StVO – is situational, not seasonal: winter tyres are required whenever there's black ice, packed snow, slush, ice or frost, and the statute names no months at all. The "October to Easter" advice you'll hear is a rule of thumb, not law.
Only tyres with the Alpine symbol (three-peak mountain with a snowflake) satisfy the law now. The old M+S marking alone stopped counting on 1 October 2024 – and some U.S. Forces material still describes M+S as sufficient, which reflects the old position. If you buy privately in the Eifel, check the sidewall. On our cars, legal tyres are our responsibility as the Halter, and our liability if we get it wrong.
Green sticker: not here, and not in Trier either
There is no Umweltzone at Spangdahlem, in Bitburg, in Wittlich – or in Trier, which is the run everyone actually makes. The city of Trier states it plainly: no Plakette is required there. In fact Rheinland-Pfalz has zero environmental zones in the whole state. The nearest places a sticker matters are cities like Stuttgart and Wiesbaden, or Munich if you head to Bavaria. Our cars carry the green sticker anyway, so a weekend anywhere in Germany never turns into a paperwork question.
You need a USAREUR licence – and it follows you, not the car
The USAREUR licence requirement attaches to the driver, not the plate, and it explicitly covers German-plated and rental vehicles – so it covers ours. You'll need a valid USAREUR licence and a valid, in-date home-country licence. Both. An expired stateside licence next to a perfectly good USAREUR card is a documented trap, and German authorities may treat it as driving unlicensed.
Insurance is the easy part: our German third-party cover is by definition "in accordance with German law", which is exactly what the SOFA agreement requires.
How long can you rent? Spangdahlem, thirty days and up
Spang has no train station and the base shuttle is official business only, so the car question usually covers a whole assignment rather than a weekend. That is the part we do. Thirty days is the shortest term we write, six months the longest, and nothing renews by itself.
It is a full day’s drive from Weiden, so we plan the handover with you rather than promising a date we would miss. Six months starts at €1,229 a month and 30 days with a VAT form at €1,033, VAT-free. Without a VAT form, 30 days costs the same figure as the monthly rate, gross. At €1,229 that is about €41 a day with fully comprehensive and partial cover (€1,500 deductible), road tax, registration, maintenance, seasonal tyres and 3,000 km a month already in it. You add fuel. There is no down payment, and the deposit is three months’ rent, due at handover in Weiden, not online.

Is there really no train to Spang?
Really. Spangdahlem has no station. The nearest passenger rail is at Philippsheim, Hüttingen and Bitburg-Erdorf, and the practical connection is a bus to Speicher, about 14 km away, where trains run toward Trier or toward Gerolstein and Cologne. Every route assumes you can handle the first and last stretch yourself.
Can't I just use the base shuttle for a while?
No - and it's worth knowing before you plan around it. The on-call shuttle is official business only. The base's own guidance says it cannot be used for lodging, housing, Commissary or Exchange runs. It exists for duty, not for life.
How fast can you get a car to Spangdahlem?
Slower than to our Bavarian bases, and we'd rather you hear it from us. Pickup is in Weiden, 508.3 km away - a six-to-seven-hour drive each way. Delivery to Spangdahlem is on request only: message us before you fly, or in your first days in TLF, and we'll confirm by email whether we can do it and on what terms.
Do I need the green environmental sticker around here?
No. Spangdahlem, Bitburg, Wittlich and Trier have no environmental zone, and Rheinland-Pfalz has none anywhere. You'd need one for cities like Stuttgart, Wiesbaden or Munich. Our cars carry it regardless, so the question never comes up.
Which German registration office covers me?
It follows your home address, not the base. Spangdahlem village and most of the immediate area are Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm (office at Trierer Straße 1, Bitburg - appointment mandatory). Live out toward Wittlich and it may be Bernkastel-Wittlich instead. With a subscription from us, you go to neither.
Do I need a USAREUR licence for your car?
Yes. The requirement follows the driver, not the plate, and covers German-plated and rental vehicles. Bring your valid USAREUR licence and your in-date home-country licence - both.
I'm at Ramstein or Baumholder, not Spang. Same deal?
