Monthly car rental for Ansbach: for Katterbach, where the station stops 5 km short.
We'll be straight with you: you are not stranded at Ansbach. Bahnhof Ansbach is a real junction - seven platform tracks, IC and ICE, hourly regional trains. The A6 is on your doorstep. The town has its own car supply. Nothing on this page needs you to believe otherwise.
In short: SubYourCar is a long-term car rental (a car subscription) for the U.S. military community at Katterbach Kaserne in Ansbach. You take a car for six months or for 30 days, from €1,229 a month on the 6-month plan (30 days from €1,229 incl. VAT, or from €1,033 VAT-free with a VAT form), with insurance, registration, maintenance, seasonal tyres and 3,000 km a month included. There is no down payment; the deposit is three months' rent, due on site at handover, not online. You get the deposit back immediately at the return, as soon as the return report shows no damage. Free pickup in Weiden, or delivery for €399.
So here's the honest pitch instead. The problem at Ansbach isn't transport. It's the gap - the weeks between landing and having a car of your own legally on the road. Buying means registration, inspection, and a licence you may not hold yet. Shipping a POV means waiting. We fill the gap: an insured, road-taxed car on our plates, six months at a time, or 30 days with your VAT form. Then you hand it back at the end of your term, or early when you PCS.

Getting the car to you
Weiden to Katterbach is a proper trip.
About 151 km. Here's where the time actually goes.
The route is A93 south out of Weiden - the interchange is about 20 km down - then A6 west past Nuremberg, off towards Ansbach, then the St 2410 and B 14 out to Katterbach. Katterbach sits about three miles east-north-east of Ansbach town. Not north, which is what nearly everyone assumes.
A routing engine gives 150.9 km and about 90 minutes from our pickup point in Weiden to Katterbach Kaserne (OSRM on OpenStreetMap data, no traffic, checked 22 September 2026). We'd rather give you a range than a figure to the minute: call it an hour and a half without traffic, and closer to two hours in a commuter peak.
The reason for the buffer is the A6 itself. This stretch is the Paris–Prague corridor - sustained heavy freight the whole way from Amberg through Nuremberg to Ansbach. Where it narrows, you get rolling truck-overtaking blockades. You never enter Nuremberg itself, but you do pass the big interchanges south of it, and they back up. In winter the A93 through the Oberpfalz adds its own weather on top.
For getting to Nuremberg, Würzburg or Stuttgart: no, you don't. Bahnhof Ansbach is a Kreuzungsbahnhof where the Nuremberg–Crailsheim and Treuchtlingen–Würzburg lines cross. RE 80 hourly, RE 90 every two hours to Stuttgart, S 4 to Nuremberg, plus IC and ICE. That is a genuinely good station and we're not going to pretend otherwise.
What the station doesn't do is the last five kilometres. Bahnhof to Katterbach is roughly 5 km - an hour or more on foot, which is not a walk in February with groceries. There is talk in the community of a VGN bus on that run. We couldn't confirm the line number or the timetable at a source we trust, so we're not printing one. Ask your sponsor, or ask us and we'll tell you exactly what we do and don't know.
One curiosity while we're here. There is a rail line into Katterbach - it branches off the Nuremberg–Crailsheim line at Wicklesgreuth. It's military and freight only, no passenger service, and whether it still runs at all we can't tell you.
Know before you go
What's actually true at Ansbach.
This is its own garrison with its own rules - and there are two registration offices in this town that are very easy to mix up.
USAG Ansbach is not USAG Bavaria. Advice doesn't transfer.
U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach is a separate garrison from USAG Bavaria. Different command, different vehicle registration office, different local procedure. If a buddy at Grafenwöhr or Vilseck tells you how something works, it may simply not apply here. The garrison runs six sites and nine kasernes across Ansbach city and Illesheim: Barton, Bismarck, Bleidorn, Franken (Oberdachstetten), Katterbach, Shipton, Storck and Urlas. (Garrison page)
Katterbach is the installation most people mean when they say "Ansbach". Bismarck Kaserne - garrison HQ since 2022 - sits straight across the B14 from it, which is why the two get treated as one place. Katterbach is home to the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade, the garrison's largest unit, and to 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery. The airfield goes back to a Luftwaffe build in 1935; the U.S. Army has been there permanently since 1949. The runway is a short 1,212 ft strip with Blackhawk pads.
Two Zulassungsstellen in one town, and only one of them is yours
Here's the local trap. Ansbach is a kreisfreie Stadt that also hosts the Landkreis offices. So there are two German registration offices, same plate code (AN), same town, different streets:
- Kfz-Zulassungsstelle, Stadt Ansbach
Nürnberger Straße 32, 91522 Ansbach · Tel. 0981 51-510 · zulassung@ansbach.de
Katterbach is a Gemeindeteil of the city, postcode 91522 - so this is the office that covers it. (Official page) - Kfz-Zulassungsstelle, Landratsamt Ansbach
Crailsheimstraße 1, 91522 Ansbach · Tel. 0981 468-0
This one covers the surrounding district, with branches in Dinkelsbühl, Feuchtwangen and Rothenburg o.d.T. (Official page)
The Army's vehicle registration office - call before you drive over
The garrison's Vehicle Registration Office is on Katterbach Kaserne. On-post buildings don't have street addresses, so what you get is a building number - and here we have to be careful with you.
The garrison's own page says Bldg 5810. Other listings say 5817A, second floor. A third says 5259. One of those may be a recent move that hasn't propagated yet. We are not going to send you to the wrong building. Ring first - CIV 0611-143-587-1151 or 587-1150 (DSN 587-1151 / 587-1150) - and check the garrison page on the day.
What the official page does say, and we'll happily repeat: walk-ins Mon–Fri 08:00–14:45, appointments Tue & Thu 08:00–11:00, and it's closed the last business day of every month. Don't turn up on the 31st.
Fees, checked 12 Sep 2026 on the garrison page: one-year registration $45, two-year $90. Appointments are booked at bookavr.timetap.com. The USAREUR licence itself is $30 and valid five years; Ansbach has its own testing station on Katterbach, ask at the registration office. Guides: the USAREUR licence test, the double white insurance card, deregistering when you PCS.
Also worth knowing: inspection and registration are two different offices. The POV Inspection Facility moved from Barton Barracks to Katterbach in August 2025 - last day at Barton 13 August, first day at Katterbach 18 August. Directions still circulating in the community point at Barton.
The car is registered to us in Weiden on WEN plates and stays that way. You're not the Halter. No registration appointment, no inspection slot, no plate run, no deregistration when you PCS. You drive it, you hand it back. The offices above matter if you're buying - which is exactly the queue we exist to help you skip while you make up your mind.
Winter tyres: "O bis O" is not law, and the M+S rule changed
You'll hear "winter tyres from October to Easter" repeated as if it were a statute. It isn't. §2 Abs. 3a StVO is situational: winter tyres are required whenever there's black ice, packed snow, slush, ice or frost. The law names no months and no dates at all. Summer tyres in a freak May slush event is an offence. Winter tyres on a dry January road were never legally compulsory.
Only tyres carrying the Alpine symbol - the little three-peak mountain with a snowflake - satisfy the law now. The old M+S marking on its own is no longer enough. Some U.S. Forces material still describes M+S as a winter tyre; that reflects the position before 2024, and German police enforce the current rule. If you buy privately, look at the sidewall for the mountain.
You may also see it claimed that the Alpine requirement starts in October 2026. That is wrong, and it's circulating. It was 2024.
On our cars this is our job, not yours. As the Halter, fitting legal tyres is our responsibility and our liability.
Green sticker: not here, and not for Nuremberg either
There is no Umweltzone in Ansbach. Bavaria has exactly three - Munich, Augsburg and Regensburg. Ansbach appears on the official register only under a Luftreinhalteplan, an air quality plan, which is not an environmental zone and imposes no sticker requirement.
And here's the one people always get wrong: Nuremberg has no Umweltzone. You do not need a Plakette to drive into Nuremberg - it too appears only under an air quality plan. Our cars carry the green sticker anyway, so Munich and Regensburg weekends are covered and the question never comes up.
You need a USAREUR licence - and it follows you, not the car
This one catches people out. The USAREUR licence requirement attaches to you, not to the plate. It covers German-plated and rental vehicles too, so it covers ours. You'll need a valid USAREUR licence and your valid, in-date home-country licence to drive one of our cars. Both. An expired stateside licence alongside a perfectly good USAREUR card is a real and documented trap.
Insurance isn't a friction point: our German third-party cover is by definition "in accordance with German law", which is exactly what the SOFA agreement asks for.
How long can you rent? Ansbach and Katterbach by the month
People typing car rental Ansbach or Katterbach car rental usually want one of two things: a car for a couple of days, or a car for the stretch between arriving and having your own on the road. We only do the second. Thirty days is the shortest we write, six months the longest.
We are in Weiden, so this is a planned handover rather than a walk-in: pickup here for free, or delivery to Ansbach for €399 (Ansbach is inside our 150 km radius, straight-line). Six months starts at €1,229 a month and 30 days with a VAT form at €1,033, VAT-free. Without a VAT form, 30 days costs the same figure as the monthly rate, gross. At €1,229 that is about €41 a day with fully comprehensive and partial cover (€1,500 deductible), road tax, registration, maintenance, seasonal tyres and 3,000 km a month already in it. You add fuel. There is no down payment, and the deposit is three months’ rent, due at handover in Weiden, not online.
Prices and the full list are on the cars page; what a VAT form does to the bill is in our guide to using a VAT form for a car rental in Germany.
Ansbach questions
Honestly - do I need a car at Ansbach?
Less than at most places we serve, and we'd rather say so out loud. The Bahnhof is a real junction with IC and ICE, the A6 is right there, and the town has its own car supply. Where we're useful is the gap: the weeks before your POV arrives, or before you've bought and registered something, when a duty day still starts at a fixed time five kilometres from the station.
How long does it take you to get a car to Ansbach?
It's about 151 km from our pickup point in Weiden - a routing engine gives roughly 90 minutes without traffic, so plan an hour and a half to two hours in a peak. Pickup in Weiden is free, and delivery to Ansbach costs €399 (Ansbach is inside our 150 km radius, straight-line): book online with the postcode of the delivery address, and we confirm the handover date by email.
Which Zulassungsstelle do I need - Nürnberger Straße or Crailsheimstraße?
Katterbach is part of the city of Ansbach, postcode 91522, so the city office at Nürnberger Straße 32 is the relevant one. Crailsheimstraße 1 is the Landkreis, covering the surrounding district. Both issue AN plates, which is exactly why people end up at the wrong counter. With a subscription from us you go to neither.
Which building is the Army vehicle registration office in?
We won't state one. The garrison's own page says Bldg 5810; other sources say 5817A or 5259, and we couldn't resolve it. Call CIV 0611-143-587-1151 before you drive over. Walk-ins are Mon-Fri 08:00-14:45, appointments Tue and Thu mornings, and it's closed the last business day of the month.
Do I need the green environmental sticker around Ansbach?
No. There's no environmental zone in Ansbach and - the one everyone misremembers - none in Nuremberg either. You'd need one for Munich, Augsburg or Regensburg. Our cars have it, so it's moot.
Do I need a USAREUR licence for your car?
Yes. The requirement follows the driver, not the plate, and it explicitly covers German-plated and rental cars. Bring your valid USAREUR licence and your home-country licence, and make sure both are in date.
I'm at Illesheim, not Katterbach. Same thing?
Same garrison, completely different situation. Storck Barracks is deep rural, about 40 km northwest, and the last stretch is Bundesstraße rather than autobahn. It has its own page: Illesheim.
Facts on this page were checked against USAG Ansbach (home.army.mil), Stadt Ansbach, Landratsamt Ansbach, the Umweltbundesamt zone register and gesetze-im-internet.de in July 2026; the distance and the route were re-checked against OSRM (OpenStreetMap routing) on 22 September 2026. Where sources conflicted - the registration building number, the Bahnhof bus - we've said so rather than pick one and hope. Offices move and rules change; if something here is out of date, tell us and we'll fix it.
