How it works from Hohenfels
Four steps, and the only one that needs your time is the handover.

Pick your car, choose a start date at least three days out and upload your licence. Add your VAT form number if you have one.
We confirm by email
We confirm the date and the place. Pickup in Weiden is free; delivery costs €399, paid with the first payment, and we confirm the time by email.
Pick up and drive
Bring your USAREUR licence and your home-country licence, sign, and pay the deposit of three months' rent on the spot. The car is registered, insured and taxed in our name.
Hand it back
After six months, or after your 30 days, you hand the car back in Weiden. Nothing renews automatically; a new subscription with another car is always possible, and the rest of the move is in the PCS to Germany car checklist.
In-processing, the car part

- Sponsor, lodging, newcomer course. ACS Relocation Readiness sits in Building 10A, General Patton Road, Camp Nainhof, Monday to Friday 07:30 to 16:00, and runs the “Hallo Hohenfels” course; Army Lodging is Camp Nainhof Bldg 63 (MilitaryINSTALLATIONS, check-in and sponsorship).
- The licence comes before the keys. The DoD installation guide says you “must obtain a USAREUR driver's license before operating a vehicle in Germany”, and AEA Reg 190-1 of 11 February 2025 extends that to civilians, family members and DOD privileged contractors (para 2-1a). The 30-day grace for newcomers covers AAFES rental vehicles and your own registered car, not ours (para 2-1g(2)) – so bring the licence and your home-country one to the handover. - Your POV does not land here. There is no vehicle processing centre at Hohenfels. The official DoD shipping portal lists Grafenwöhr, Monday to Friday 08:00 to 16:00, for this garrison – about 95 km and 77 minutes from the Hohenfels PX (OSRM, no traffic, 22 September 2026). The address and the appointment are on that portal, which is the only place we will send you for them, and it tells you to register the vehicle in the USAREUR system before pickup (PCSmyPOV). You choose the destination when the shipment is booked; the weeks until then are what driving while your POV is on the boat is about.
- Registering your own car. POVs are registered in Bldg. 309, with inspection and insurance done first (MilitaryINSTALLATIONS). That office runs on a walk-in basis only and closes at 12 p.m. on the last workday of the month for inventory; we could read that much of the garrison page only through a search result on 22 September 2026, so confirm the room, the hours and the telephone number there on the day rather than here. Take AE Form 190-1AA, the stateside registration or title, the double white insurance card, your USAREUR licence, your ID card, DD Form 788 for a shipped POV and the passed inspection sheet, plus the $45 registration fee (Military OneSource, USAG Bavaria); the USAREUR licence itself costs $30 and is valid five years (USAG Bavaria, wording of 19 May 2026). The double white card is the German-format proof of insurance the counter wants and a U.S. card is not it – what your insurer has to issue is in car insurance in Germany for the U.S. military. Step by step: registering a car with USAREUR, and for the Bavaria counters Bldg 301 at Grafenwoehr and Vilseck. With a subscription you skip all of it – the car stays registered, insured and taxed in our name.
- The VAT office. Hohenfels has its own, and one rule matters before you sign anything anywhere: “if you don't have a VAT form, do not commit or sign any documents just yet” (Hohenfels VAT office, updated 6 November 2025). With us the NF-1 number goes in when you book and the form comes to the handover; what it does to the bill is in using a VAT form for a car rental.
- If you would rather buy. The garrison runs an Auto Skills Center at Camp Poellnricht Bldg 392A, open Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Hohenfels MWR). Whether buying beats a subscription depends on what the car costs you when you sell it again – the arithmetic is in lemon lot or subscription.

Where the time actually goes, measured rather than guessed.
A routing engine (OSRM on OpenStreetMap data, no traffic, measured 22 September 2026) gives 79.9 km and 60 minutes from our pickup point in Weiden to Hohenfels village, and 82.5 km and 63 minutes to the bus stop in front of Gate 1. We tell customers 60 to 75 minutes, because a no-traffic figure is a floor, not a promise. About 39 km is autobahn – the A93 out of Weiden, then the A6 – and the other 41 km are the St 2165 and St 2234: unlit, wildlife after dark, cleared later than an autobahn when it snows. Coming from the A3, the Parsberg exit brings you to Gate 5 (MilitaryINSTALLATIONS). In training season, allow for armour on those roads: in April 2018 more than 700 military vehicles road-marched from Grafenwöhr to Hohenfels over three days (DVIDS).
There is no station in Hohenfels. The nearest is Parsberg, 11 to 13 km from post, and bahnhof.de lists it with no staff and no mobility service, but with a taxi rank (checked 22 September 2026). The DoD installation guide is just as plain: from Parsberg, travellers “will need to arrange a taxi or an authorized pickup”, the shuttle between post and the surrounding towns is described as limited, and Nuremberg airport is roughly 45 to 60 minutes away.
We are not printing a door-to-door time from Weiden by train and bus: we could not verify one at a source we trust. Plan the first handover with a lift.
Two German rules, briefly
The green sticker and the winter tyres.
Green sticker. There is no Umweltzone in Hohenfels or Neumarkt. Bavaria has exactly three – Munich, Augsburg and Regensburg, the last since January 2018 (Bavarian Environment Ministry). Regensburg is your nearest real city, so the rule does bite in normal life here; our cars carry the sticker, so drive in.
Winter tyres. § 2 (3a) StVO is about conditions, not dates: with black ice, packed snow, slush or frost, a car may only be driven on winter tyres – the 50 km/h limit you may have heard of applies to the few vehicle types that are allowed out without them, not to a normal car. On our cars that is our job as the owner: both sets are fitted and swapped in the price.
How long can you rent at Hohenfels, and what does it cost?
If you need a car for a day or a weekend, a rental counter is the better answer and we will not pretend otherwise: our shortest term is 30 days, our longest six months, and neither rolls on quietly – the contract ends and a new one is a new decision. What we are built for is the month-scale stretch: the weeks before a POV is released, or a whole tour without buying a car.
Hohenfels is about an hour from us, and the handover is in Weiden. Six months starts at €1,229 a month and 30 days with a VAT form at €1,033, VAT-free. I only need a car for a few days. Can you do that?

Can I manage at Hohenfels without a car?
Realistically, no. The nearest station is Parsberg, 11 to 13 km from post, unstaffed but with a taxi rank, and the DoD installation guide tells arrivals to arrange a taxi or an authorised pickup from there. The shuttle to the surrounding towns is described as limited.
Do I need a USAREUR licence to drive your car?
Yes. AEA Reg 190-1 of 11 February 2025 requires the U.S. Forces Certificate of License for military and civilian personnel, family members and DOD privileged contractors. Do I have to register the car or get plates?
No. The car stays registered, insured and taxed in our name, so there is no Zulassungsstelle, no plate run and nothing to deregister when you PCS. You hand back the keys.
Do I need the green environmental sticker?
Not for Hohenfels or Neumarkt. But yes for Regensburg, which is your nearest real city and has had a zone since January 2018. Our cars carry it, so you can just go.
Which German registration office is closest if I buy a car?
The Parsberg branch of the Landratsamt Neumarkt i.d.OPf., Alte Seer Str. 2, is much closer than the main office in Neumarkt. It publishes its phone number and opening hours on the Landkreis website and asks you to book an appointment. With a subscription you need neither.
