Why people pick the 5 Series Sedan 520d xDrive M Sport Pro

  • The new 5 Series: executive space, curved display, all-wheel drive.
  • Diesel range of well over 1,000 km on a tank.

Who the 5 Series Sedan 520d xDrive suits

The 520d xDrive Sedan is the current 5 Series generation and the business-class car of our Executive price class. It has a 2.0-litre diesel mild hybrid with 197 hp, automatic gearbox and xDrive all-wheel drive, plus M Sport Pro styling and BMW's curved display inside.

It suits people who spend a lot of time on the Autobahn and want to arrive relaxed: long drives between bases, trips to Frankfurt airport, or weekend visits across Germany. The diesel gives a long range, the cabin is quiet, and the rear seats offer real legroom for adults. All-wheel drive and the seasonal tyres we fit make it confident in winter too.

Picture a typical month: a conference in Wiesbaden, a week of meetings at Ramstein, two weekends visiting friends at other bases and the daily commute in between. That is the rhythm the 520d xDrive is made for. The diesel keeps fuel stops rare, xDrive takes the stress out of winter mornings, and the rear seats are roomy enough to carry colleagues without apologies. It is also a good choice for anyone who wants a calm, comfortable car rather than a sporty one. The one limit is bulky cargo: a sedan's boot opening is smaller than a wagon's tailgate, so moves and big dogs belong in the Touring.

The sedan has a separate boot that keeps luggage out of sight, which some people prefer when parking at hotels or airports. If you need to carry bulky things or a dog, the 520d xDrive Touring is the same car as a wagon at the same price. If you want the same body with a six-cylinder and much more pull, the 540d xDrive Sedan sits in our top price class. For a smaller BMW sedan at a lower price, the 3 Series Sedan 320d is the natural step down.

Everyday facts: BMW 5 Series Sedan 520d

At 520 litres, the BMW 5 Series Sedan 520d ranks number 9 of 26 cars in our fleet for boot space (level with the BMW 5 Series Sedan 540d).

Is there a deposit?

Is the 520d Sedan all-wheel drive?

Yes. Our 5 Series Sedan is the 520d xDrive: a 2.0-litre diesel mild hybrid with 197 hp, an automatic gearbox and xDrive all-wheel drive, in M Sport Pro trim.

520d Sedan or 540d Sedan?

Same body and space. The 520d has the four-cylinder diesel with 197 hp and is the sensible choice for most drivers; the 540d has a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel with 299 hp for more pulling power and calm overtaking.

How big is the boot of the 520d Sedan?

520 litres with all seats in use (figures from BMW, 520d xDrive Limousine Steptronic). Our source gives no figure with the rear seats folded. The 520d Touring takes 50 litres more (570 litres).

How much fuel does the 520d Sedan use?

Officially 6.0 litres of diesel per 100 km combined, with combined CO₂ emissions of 157 g/km and CO₂ class F (WLTP, figures from BMW, 520d xDrive Limousine Steptronic). WLTP is a test value; your own figure depends on how you drive.

How much can the 520d Sedan tow?

Up to 2,000 kg braked at a 12 % gradient, according to BMW (520d xDrive Limousine Steptronic). A hitch depends on the concrete car: request it at booking, we confirm by email.

How big is the 520d Sedan on the outside, will it fit my garage?

It is 5,060 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,515 mm high (figures from BMW). The width is the body; the mirrors come on top.
