Why people pick the 2 Series Active Tourer 223 xDrive M Sport Pro
- The family BMW: sliding rear bench, tall doors, flat load floor.
- All-wheel drive and 218 hp make it anything but a minivan to drive.
Who the 2 Series Active Tourer suits
The 2 Series Active Tourer is the family BMW in our fleet. It is a compact MPV: taller than a hatchback, with high doors and an upright seating position that make buckling children into car seats easier. The floor is flat and the body is short enough for normal parking spaces on post and in town.
Our car is a 223 xDrive M Sport Pro with a 2.0-litre petrol mild hybrid, 218 hp, automatic gearbox and xDrive all-wheel drive. That means it does not drive like a slow people carrier. It pulls well on the Autobahn with a full car, and all-wheel drive together with our seasonal tyres gives confidence on winter roads.
Picture the Active Tourer on a winter school morning in the Upper Palatinate: two car seats, a scooter, lunch boxes and a steep driveway with frost on it. The upright body makes buckling in easier, xDrive gets you moving on the slope, and the petrol engine does not mind that the school is only four kilometres away. It also suits grandparents visiting for a few months, because getting out of a higher seat is easier on the knees than climbing out of a low sedan. For a PCS family that wants one sensible car for the whole tour without the bulk of a large SUV in German parking garages, it is one of the most practical choices we have.
It suits young families, parents with two child seats, and anyone who wants the space of an SUV without its height and bulk. The petrol engine suits mixed driving and short school and daycare runs better than a diesel. If you need a larger boot for long holidays, look at the BMW 3 Series Touring or the Cupra Leon Sportstourer; if you drive mostly long distances, the diesel BMW X3 20d xDrive is the more economical all-wheel-drive family car.
