Why people pick the X2 M Sport

  • The X1's sportier sibling: sloping roof, bigger wheels, same practicality.
  • Curved display, wireless CarPlay.

Who the BMW X2 suits

The X2 is the sportier sibling of the X1. It uses the same platform, but the roofline slopes down towards the rear like a coupé, and the M Sport package adds larger wheels and sportier bumpers. Inside you get BMW's curved display, and wireless Apple CarPlay makes it easy to use your US phone for navigation straight away.

Our car is an sDrive20i M Sport: a 1.5-litre petrol mild hybrid with 170 hp, front-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox. It suits drivers who like the higher seating position of an SUV but care about looks, and who drive a mix of short trips and weekend Autobahn runs. The petrol engine is a better fit than a diesel if you mostly drive short distances on post and around town.

The X2 suits a posting where most driving is local and the weekends are for going somewhere: short daily runs between housing and work, where a petrol engine is the right choice, and then a Saturday in Munich or a drive along the Romantic Road. It is a good match for a couple without children or with one small child. Because it shares its platform with the X1, it parks just as easily in German garages and village streets. Think about your rear passengers and your view to the rear before booking: the coupé roof trades some of both for the looks.

Because of the coupé roof, rear headroom and the view out of the back are more limited than in the X1. Couples and small families with one child seat are fine; if you often have tall passengers in the rear, the X1 at the same price is the more practical choice. The X2 is front-wheel drive, so winter traction comes from the seasonal tyres we fit rather than from all-wheel drive.

Is there a deposit?

Is the X2 petrol or diesel?

Petrol. Our X2 is the sDrive20i: a 1.5-litre petrol mild hybrid with 170 hp, front-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox. That suits short and mixed driving better than a diesel.

Is the X2 more practical than the X1?

No, the X1 is the more practical of the two, with more rear headroom and a better view to the rear. The X2 is similarly compact but has a sloping coupé roof, and it has a petrol engine instead of the X1's diesel.

How big is the boot of the X2?

515 litres with all seats in use, up to 1,400 litres with the rear seats folded (figures from BMW, X2 sDrive20i Steptronic). The X1 takes 25 litres more (540 litres).

How much can the X2 tow?

Up to 1,800 kg braked at a 12 % gradient, according to the ADAC car catalogue (X2 sDrive20i Steptronic). A hitch depends on the concrete car: request it at booking, we confirm by email.

How fast is the X2?

0 to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds and a top speed of 213 km/h, according to BMW (X2 sDrive20i Steptronic).
