Why people pick the 1 Series 123 xDrive M Sport
- The new 1 Series with all-wheel drive and real pace.
- Compact enough for the tight garages on post.
Who the BMW 1 Series 123 xDrive suits
The 123 xDrive is a compact hatchback with more going on than its size suggests. It uses a 2.0-litre petrol mild hybrid with 218 hp, an automatic gearbox and xDrive all-wheel drive. That combination is rare in this class: you get a small car for tight streets and garages, with the traction of all-wheel drive when the roads turn wet or snowy.
It suits singles and couples who want something quick and fun without the size and running costs of a larger car, and who drive in all seasons. Think of commuting from a village outside Grafenwoehr on country roads, or regular winter weekends in the mountains. The boot holds about 380 litres, fine for a weekend away for two or the weekly shop.
The 123 xDrive makes sense for single soldiers and couples who want one car for everything without driving something big: the daily drive to post in any weather, a Friday evening run to Nuremberg, a ski weekend in Austria for two. The petrol engine is fine with short trips around post, and with 218 hp it merges onto the Autobahn without drama. Its compact size makes the old-town garages of Regensburg or Bamberg less stressful. What you give up compared with a bigger car is rear legroom and boot space, so it is not the car for a family holiday.
Five doors and five seats make it usable for a small child in the back, but it is not a family car for long trips with a lot of luggage. For that, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer uses the same engine and all-wheel drive in a taller, roomier body at the same price. If you want even more power in a compact size, the M135 xDrive has 300 hp.
