Why people pick the X1 M Sport

  • High seat, easy in and out, fits a stroller and a week of groceries.
  • 2.0-litre diesel with an automatic gearbox, compact enough for tight parking spaces.

Who the BMW X1 suits

The X1 is built around everyday problems. You sit higher, which makes getting a child into a car seat easier on your back, and the doors open wide. The boot holds about 540 litres, enough for a folded pram plus the weekly shop, and the body stays compact enough for the parking spaces in older housing areas.

Our X1 is an sDrive18d M Sport: a 2.0-litre diesel with 150 hp, front-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox. The diesel suits families who drive a lot, whether that is the daily run to the Child Development Center and the gate or a drive back from the airport with the whole family and luggage.

A typical X1 household has young children and a busy week: drop-off at the Child Development Center, a shift, the commissary on the way home, soccer practice on Saturday. The higher seat and wide-opening doors make the dozens of in-and-out moments of that week easier on your back, and the diesel is a good match if the week also includes regular drives between post and off-post housing in the villages. It is also an easy car for someone new to driving in Germany: you sit up high with a good view of junctions and parking spaces, and the automatic gearbox takes care of stop-and-go traffic.

It is important to know that this X1 is front-wheel drive, not xDrive. With the winter tyres we fit it handles normal Upper Palatinate winters well, but it is not an off-road car. If you need all-wheel drive, the BMW X3 20d xDrive or the Mercedes GLA 4MATIC are the closest alternatives. If you like the X1 but want a sportier roofline, the X2 is built on the same platform and costs the same.

Questions

What is included in the monthly price?

Fully comprehensive and partial cover with a EUR 1,500 deductible, registration, German plates and road tax, maintenance and service, seasonal tyres, 3,000 km a month and a PCS clause. There is no setup fee. VAT forms accepted. You add fuel.

Is there a deposit?

Yes, three months' rent of your plan: €3,897 on the 6-month plan and on the 30-day plan incl. VAT, €3,276 on the 30-day plan with a VAT form (NF-1), VAT-free. You pay it on site at handover, not online. You get the deposit back immediately at the return, as soon as the return report shows no damage. There is no down payment. For customers resident in Germany we run a credit check with SCHUFA Holding AG before the contract starts. If the result is negative, we may decline the booking; anything already paid is refunded in full.

Is the X1 all-wheel drive?

No. Our X1 is the sDrive18d: front-wheel drive with a 2.0-litre diesel, 150 hp and an automatic gearbox. With winter tyres it handles normal winters well; for all-wheel drive look at the Mercedes GLA 4MATIC or the BMW X3 20d xDrive.

X1 or X2?

Same platform, different priorities. The X1 has the more upright body with more rear headroom and a better view out of the back, and it is a diesel. The X2 has the coupé roofline and a petrol engine. For families with child seats and tall passengers, the X1 is the practical choice.

How big is the boot of the X1?

540 litres with all seats in use, up to 1,600 litres with the rear seats folded (figures from the ADAC car catalogue, X1 sDrive18d Steptronic). That is 25 litres more than the X2 (515 litres).

How much can the X1 tow?

Up to 1,800 kg braked at a 12 % gradient, according to the ADAC car catalogue (X1 sDrive18d Steptronic). A hitch depends on the concrete car: request it at booking, we confirm by email.

How big is the X1 on the outside, will it fit my garage?

It is 4,500 mm long, 1,845 mm wide and 1,642 mm high (figures from the ADAC car catalogue). The width is the body; the mirrors come on top.
