Who the Mercedes GLA 4MATIC suits

The GLA is the smallest all-wheel-drive SUV in our fleet. Our car is a GLA 220 d 4MATIC: 2.0-litre diesel, 190 hp, automatic gearbox and Mercedes' 4MATIC all-wheel drive. If you want the extra traction of all-wheel drive for winter but do not need or want a large SUV, this is the car to look at.

It suits people who live on a hill, drive early before the snow ploughs have been through, or regularly head into the Bavarian Forest or the Alps in winter. The diesel gives it good range for long weekend drives. You sit higher than in the A-Class, getting in and out is easy, and the compact length still fits into tight parking garages.

The GLA is the car we would point to if you are posted somewhere with real winters and live off the main roads: a house at the end of a village lane near Grafenwoehr, an early shift at Hohenfels before the ploughs are through, or weekends in the Bavarian Forest. 4MATIC gives you traction when you pull away on a slippery slope, and the diesel suits the longer distances of rural life. Outside winter it is simply an easy SUV to live with: compact enough for town, high enough for easy getting in and out. Remember that all-wheel drive helps you get moving, not stop sooner, so keep your distance on ice.

Inside there are five seats and AMG Line trim. The rear bench works for children and for adults on shorter trips; families who carry a big pram every day or three child seats will find more room in the BMW X3 or the Mercedes GLC. The winter tyres we fit plus 4MATIC make the GLA one of the most confident cars in our mid price class on cold, wet roads, but all-wheel drive does not shorten braking distances, so drive to the conditions.

Questions

What is included in the monthly price?

Fully comprehensive and partial cover with a EUR 1,500 deductible, registration, German plates and road tax, maintenance and service, seasonal tyres, 3,000 km a month and a PCS clause. There is no setup fee. VAT forms accepted. You add fuel.

Is there a deposit?

Yes, three months' rent of your plan: €4,497 on the 6-month plan and on the 30-day plan incl. VAT, €3,780 on the 30-day plan with a VAT form (NF-1), VAT-free. You pay it on site at handover, not online. You get the deposit back immediately at the return, as soon as the return report shows no damage. There is no down payment. For customers resident in Germany we run a credit check with SCHUFA Holding AG before the contract starts. If the result is negative, we may decline the booking; anything already paid is refunded in full.

Is the GLA really all-wheel drive?

Yes. Our GLA is the 220 d 4MATIC with Mercedes' 4MATIC all-wheel drive, a 2.0-litre diesel with 190 hp and an automatic gearbox. It is the smallest all-wheel-drive SUV in our fleet.

GLA or GLC?

Both are Mercedes diesel SUVs with 4MATIC. The GLA is more compact and easier to park; the GLC is the midsize SUV with a bigger boot and more room for two child seats. Pick by space, not by winter ability: both drive all four wheels.

How big is the boot of the GLA?

427 litres with all seats in use, up to 1,422 litres with the rear seats folded (figures from the ADAC car catalogue, GLA 220 d 4MATIC 8G-DCT). The GLC takes 193 litres more (620 litres).

How much can the GLA tow?

Up to 2,000 kg braked at a 12 % gradient, according to the ADAC car catalogue (GLA 220 d 4MATIC 8G-DCT). A hitch depends on the concrete car: request it at booking, we confirm by email.

How big is the GLA on the outside, will it fit my garage?

It is 4,412 mm long, 1,834 mm wide and 1,616 mm high (figures from the ADAC car catalogue). The width is the body; the mirrors come on top.
