Why people pick the 2 Series Gran Coupé 218d M Sport

  • Diesel economy for long Autobahn weekends: Munich, Prague, the Alps.
  • M Sport look without the M Sport fuel bill.

Who the 2 Series Gran Coupé suits

The 218d is one of two diesels in our entry price class, and the more compact of the two. That is the main reason to pick it. A 2.0-litre diesel with 150 hp, front-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox is built for people who cover real distance: a daily commute between post and off-post housing, plus weekend runs to Munich, Prague or the Alps without planning your trip around fuel stops.

The body is a four-door coupé with five seats. You get the low, stretched look of a coupé but still four proper doors, so getting a child seat in and out or giving colleagues a lift works fine. Rear headroom is tighter than in a classic sedan like the 3 Series, so tall passengers who ride in the back every day will be happier there.

Where the 218d earns its keep is the commute. Live off post in a village, drive 40 or 50 km a day, and a diesel with an automatic gearbox makes that routine relaxed and light on fuel stops. It also suits TDY trips and training courses at other installations: bag in the boot, a few hours of Autobahn, done. The compact length helps in German town centres and tight garages where bigger sedans get awkward. What it is not is a pure short-trip car. A diesel that only ever drives three kilometres to the gate never warms up properly, and a petrol car suits that pattern better.

The M Sport package gives the car its sporty bumpers and seats; the engine stays the efficient 218d. In winter you drive on front-wheel drive with seasonal tyres included, which is enough for cleared roads around Grafenwoehr and Vilseck. If you need all-wheel drive for a steep driveway or regular trips into the hills, the BMW 1 Series 123 xDrive or the Mercedes GLA 4MATIC are the better choice.

Fully comprehensive and partial cover with a EUR 1,500 deductible, registration, German plates and road tax, maintenance and service, seasonal tyres, 3,000 km a month and a PCS clause. There is no setup fee. VAT forms accepted. You add fuel.

Is there a deposit?

Yes, three months' rent of your plan: €3,897 on the 6-month plan and on the 30-day plan incl. VAT, €3,276 on the 30-day plan with a VAT form (NF-1), VAT-free. You pay it on site at handover, not online. You get the deposit back immediately at the return, as soon as the return report shows no damage. There is no down payment. For customers resident in Germany we run a credit check with SCHUFA Holding AG before the contract starts. If the result is negative, we may decline the booking; anything already paid is refunded in full.

Is the 2 Series Gran Coupé 218d a diesel?

Yes: a 2.0-litre diesel with 150 hp, front-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox. At German fuel stations the pump is labelled Diesel. Super and Super E10 are petrol and must not go into this car.

2 Series Gran Coupé or 3 Series Sedan?

Both are BMW diesels with an automatic gearbox. The 218d Gran Coupé is the more compact car with front-wheel drive and a lower roofline. The 320d Sedan has 190 hp instead of 150, rear-wheel drive and more headroom in the back, which matters if adults ride there every day.

How big is the boot of the 2 Series Gran Coupé?

430 litres with all seats in use (figures from BMW, 218d Gran Coupé Steptronic). Our source gives no figure with the rear seats folded. The 3 Series Sedan takes 50 litres more (480 litres).

How much fuel does the 2 Series Gran Coupé use?

Officially 5.0 litres of diesel per 100 km combined, with combined CO₂ emissions of 132 g/km and CO₂ class D (WLTP, figures from BMW, 218d Gran Coupé Steptronic). WLTP is a test value; your own figure depends on how you drive.

How big is the 2 Series Gran Coupé on the outside, will it fit my garage?

It is 4,546 mm long, 1,800 mm wide and 1,445 mm high (figures from BMW). The width is the body; the mirrors come on top.
