Nuremberg Airport to Grafenwoehr and Vilseck: the road, the train, the taxi.

Nuremberg is the nearest of the three airports the garrison points newcomers to: 90 km by road to Tower Barracks and 85 km to Rose Barracks. A train runs to Vilseck, none runs to Grafenwoehr, and we found no garrison shuttle to the airport. Here are the measured distances and what the official pages say about each way in.

Which airport is closest to Grafenwoehr?

USAG Bavaria links three airports: Nuremberg, Munich and Frankfurt (USAG Bavaria, newcomers). Military OneSource puts Nuremberg “approximately one hour from Grafenwoehr”, Munich at “approximately 2 hours” and Frankfurt at “approximately 3 hours” (Military OneSource, USAG Bavaria, read 13 October 2026). Measured:

  • Nuremberg Airport: 90.4 km and 69 minutes to Tower Barracks, Gate 3; 84.8 km and 65 minutes to Rose Barracks.
  • Munich Airport: 200.9 km and 128 minutes to Tower Barracks, Gate 3; 198.2 km and 133 minutes to Rose Barracks.
  • Frankfurt Airport: 308.7 km and 185 minutes to Tower Barracks, Gate 3; 303.0 km and 181 minutes to Rose Barracks.

Method: routing engine without traffic, OSRM on OpenStreetMap data, measured 13 October 2026, from the terminal (Nuremberg: the airport's U-Bahn station; Munich: Terminal 2; Frankfurt: Terminal 1) to the GPS address Military OneSource gives for Tower Barracks, Neue Amberger Strasse 109 at main gate #3, and to the navigation point the garrison publishes for Rose Barracks on the St 2120 (garrison GPS list, PDF). A figure without traffic is a lower bound, not a promise.

Driving from Nuremberg Airport to Tower Barracks

The Army's directions: “head in the direction of Autobahn A9 toward Berlin. Take exit "Pegnitz/Grafenwoehr" and follow signs to Grafenwoehr (approximately 30-35 KM). Once in the town of Grafenwoehr at the main intersection turn right and enter main gate #3 on your right.” The routing engine took the same way: the A 3, then 37 km on the A 9, then about 35 km off the autobahn on the B 85, the B 470 and the St 2168.

Driving from Nuremberg Airport to Rose Barracks, Vilseck

84.8 km and 65 minutes. The engine takes the A 3 and 27 km of the A 6, then the St 2164, the B 85, the St 2166 and the St 2120. Military OneSource's directions for Vilseck, written from Frankfurt, also use the A 6: “Take exit Amberg West and follow B 299 to Amberg”.

By train: to Vilseck yes, to Grafenwoehr no

Military OneSource: “The Nuernberg airport has an underground station (U-Bahn). Line U2 takes you to the main train station in Nuernberg. From there you can take the train directly to Vilseck or Freihung.” And: “Grafenwoehr does not have a train station. The closest train station is in the town of Freihung”. The line is the RE 41 between Nuremberg and Weiden, which runs hourly (departure board Weiden (Oberpf), valid from 14 December 2025, bahnhof.de, read 22 September 2026 for our Vilseck page).

One garrison tip saves a wrong train: “a train leaving Nuernberg has the ultimate destination Neustadt a.d. Waldnaab, but this is your train to Vilseck, Freihung, and Weiden” (USAG Bavaria, things to know).

The last stretch is by road. Vilseck station to the Rose Barracks navigation point is 3.2 km; Freihung station to Tower Barracks, Gate 3, is 14.7 km and 14 minutes (same engine and date). Military OneSource says taxis usually wait outside both stations, and that “taxis in Germany are usually much more expensive than in the US”.

Shuttle, S-Bus, taxi: what exists and what does not

  • Patriot Express: the S-Bus. You land at Ramstein, not at one of the three airports. “You are required to take the free S-bus transportation to your new installation” (Military OneSource), and “Soldiers assigned to Vilseck or Garmisch will depart the bus in Grafenwoehr” (check-in procedures).
  • Commercial flight: your unit. “It is the unit’s responsibility to meet and transport Soldiers, and their family members, arriving via commercial air.” Ask your sponsor before you book anything else.
  • A garrison airport shuttle: we found none. The Official Duty Shuttle on the garrison's transportation page runs between Tower Barracks, Rose Barracks and Netzaberg and is “designated primarily for service members” (USAG Bavaria, transportation, page last modified 29 May 2026). No airport run is listed there.
  • Taxi or airport transfer. The same page lists taxis for Tower Barracks and for Rose Barracks and one airport transfer service for Nuremberg, Frankfurt and Munich, under “NO ENDORSEMENT IMPLIED”. Its rules: the driver needs a U.S. Installation Pass, or “the driver will not be allowed on-post”; bring your own child seat; pay in euros. It publishes no fares, so we print none.

A car for the first days, and where we fit

For the first days a daily rental is the right tool, and it is not ours: SubYourCar has no day rate, no desk at the airport and a shortest term of 30 days. Two reminders: you need the USAREUR licence before you drive (the licence test), and the garrison says the military does not reimburse a rental (rental car during a PCS).

If the gap is 30 days or longer, our pickup point is in Weiden: 21.9 km from Tower Barracks and 32.3 km from Rose Barracks, and 118.0 km and 74 minutes by road from Nuremberg Airport (measured 22 September and 13 October 2026). The same RE 41 goes on to Weiden, and the pickup point is about 1 km from the station. From €1,229 a month with 3,000 km a month included, start date at least three days out. Pickup in Weiden is free. Delivery costs €399 within a 150 km radius of Weiden (straight-line distance). More for your post: Grafenwoehr and Vilseck.
